Overview

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking skilled professionals to support a wide range of program and technical services across the institute. This is a remote position with occasional onsite visits required for key personnel to support collaboration, planning, and program delivery.The NICHD OIT team provides full lifecycle IT support, helping the institute maintain a secure, efficient, and modern technology environment. Team members will work alongside NIH scientists, administrators, and stakeholders to deliver innovative, compliant, and user-centered digital solutions that advance NICHD’s strategic goals.

As a QA Tester, you will play a key role in ensuring the quality and reliability of NICHD’s web applications and IT solutions. This position emphasizes hands-on manual testing, test case creation, and defect tracking, with opportunities to contribute to test automation scripting using platforms such as Cypress.

You will drive testing strategy using modern tools and techniques—including AI-assisted testing, preview environments, and accessibility-first design—and help establish a scalable, sustainable test automation framework aligned with the APMS (Assess–Prioritize–Modernize–Sustain) and Product Management approaches. This role requires strong collaboration across development, infrastructure, and business teams within a multi-contractor environment.

What You'll Do

  • Manual Testing

    • Review requirements, user stories, and technical specifications to design and execute comprehensive manual test cases and test suites.
    • Perform functional, regression, smoke, data integrity, security, and Section 508 accessibility testing on web applications, APIs, and databases.
    • Document and track defects, issues, and test results using standard QA tools and processes.
    • Plan, document, and execute manual test plans for new features, enhancements, and bug fixes across development, staging, UAT, and production environments.
  • Test Automation Support

    • Collaborate with senior engineers to identify opportunities for transitioning manual tests to automated scripts.
    • Assist in writing and maintaining basic test automation scripts using Cypress or similar platforms.
    • Support integration of test automation into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, Jenkins).
  • Quality Assurance & Reporting

    • Prepare and submit detailed test documentation, including test cases, results, and defect logs.
    • Contribute to monthly progress reports and participate in QA meetings to discuss assignments, quality control, and delivery schedules.
  • Collaboration & Communication

    • Work closely with developers, business analysts, and project managers to clarify requirements, acceptance criteria, and ensure quality deliverables.
    • Participate in team meetings and provide feedback on testing processes and improvements.
  • Compliance & Security

    • Ensure all testing activities comply with federal standards (Section 508, FISMA, HHS, NIH, NICHD).
    • Support vulnerability scanning, remediation, and incident response as required.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • 2+ years of experience in manual software testing for web applications and enterprise systems.
  • Strong knowledge of QA methodologies, test case design, and defect tracking.
  • Experience with test management and bug tracking tools (e.g., Jira, Azure DevOps).
  • Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility standards and compliance testing.
  • Basic experience or interest in writing test automation scripts (Cypress preferred).
  • Ability to plan, document, and execute manual and automated test plans.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Green Card Holder (required for federal contract).

Salary Range

The salary range is $105,000-115,000/year. The salary range for this position reflects a variety of factors that influence compensation decisions, including skills, experience, training, certifications, and organizational needs.
